Las Vegas Reactor #3 is Forced to SCRAM after Control Rods Fail

Wed, Jun 11, 2014 1:30 PM

This morning at 11:42 AM, a SCRAM order was given at Las Vegas Nuclear Station, Reactor #3. It was caused by a failure in the control rod mechanism preventing them from entering the reactor core. The reactor quickly overheated, but thanks to our skilled team of engineers the reactor was safely shut down and is preparing to be inspected. Our other three reactor cores were able to continue to operate safely and without interruption.

We are currently assessing the situation and have an inspection of the reactor core pending. Our team is working diligently to ensure the safety of our employees, the community, and the environment. At this time, we are unsure when Reactor #3 will be back online, however we can assure our stakeholders that we are taking all necessary precautions to minimize the impact of this event.

Anderson-Reed Nuclear takes safety very seriously and we will be in contact with local regulatory agencies as well as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission going forward.
